WELL WHAT A YEAR 2019/2020
June 2019 to January 2020 went along like any other year…
Local businesses were experiencing growth, tourism was strong, and there was great Mussel Festival attendance.
The ferry had increased passenger growth with people travelling to work each morning. Plus tourism numbers increased as more groups travelled from Docklands to Portarlington.
Then in February 2020 Covid-19 arrived in Australia and our lives changed significantly with shutdowns of businesses, schools and most other community activities.
The Portarlington community responded magnificently looking after each
other and those who required special assistance. Businesses immediately responded producing “take away” meals.
It is vital that we support all our businesses in Portarlington not just for meals.
We have a number of terrific tradies in our
directory so if you need a job done then call a local one.
The impact of Covid -19 on local businesses has been severe.
Tourism has been significantly impacted and it is tourism that we rely on to carry us through the lean winter months.
• Caravan parks were shut down
• Easter business was way below 2019
• The National Celtic Festival was cancelled
• The 2021 Mussel festival has also been cancelled.
Shopping and supporting local traders is vital for the 2020/2021 year.
Now some good news.
The following projects will continue in
• The rebuild of the Portarlington Football/Netball club. Most impressed by the
work of President Linda Shaw and Marketing Director Darren Hellmann and am looking forward to the 2021 season .
• The Grand Hotel is being restored to it’s former grandeur.
• Completion of Harbour View apartments [next to the Grand Hotel] which look amazing .
• Building of a cover that will shield ferry passengers from the elements as they walk to and from the ferry .
• The Portarlington Golf Club extension was completed in July and is a WOW!
• John Nankervis C.E.O. Bellarine Bayside has announced his retirement. Thanks John for all the great work that has occurred during your leadership.
The foreshore has never looked better – Enjoy that retirement.
• The Portarlington Golf Club C.E.O. Ron Stockdale has also announced his retirement. Ron has led the club magnificently, with the golf club winning many awards during his term. Enjoy that caravan Ron and Carol.
Thanks for everything.
In the 2019/20 directory I finished my report with
“Portarlington – a fabulous place to live following all the projects completed” and I am using it again.
Portarlington – a fabulous place to live, and that is due to how our community looked after each other during the pandemic.
Portarlington Business Development Association Community Award 2019
The P.B.D.A. was delighted to present the 2019 Community award to the Portarlington –Drysdale Lions club president Stephen Love.
Stephen then gave a talk on what Lions do to the 127 PBDA members at the Jack Rabbit evening.
The presentation was both interesting and informative and quite a few people mentioned to me during the evening they were not aware of how much work Lions do and the amount of money they give to the community.
The Club raised $125,000 in the 2018/2019 year and the majority of those funds were distributed in local areas.
In the past year the Lions took over managing the Sunday Portarlington market from the Primary school. Member Angelo Polidoras led this project and did an amazing job.
The Lions team experienced large growth in the number of stallholders, increased public attendance and they even sold a Saab convertible at one market.
Lions are a fabulous asset for both Portarlington and Drysdale.
Thanks to all the Lions members for the hours they devote to our community.
Lions you are a group that DO things rather than sit around talking.
Congratulations on the award, it was well deserved.
John Rae – President P.B.D.A.
